LocalAI is a drop-in replacement for the OpenAI API that runs entirely on your own hardware. One binary serves text generation, image generation, speech-to-text and text-to-speech behind OpenAI-compatible endpoints, backed by a model gallery and pluggable inference backends. Heavier than llama.cpp, but multi-modal and self-managing.

Home Assistant OS is the appliance image of Home Assistant, managing its own supervisor and add-ons. This installs the official image as a VM.

DietPi is a lightweight Debian-based OS with a curated software catalogue (dietpi-software) and simple configuration tools. The script creates a Debian LXC and converts it with the official dietpi-installer.

Valhalla is an open-source routing engine and accompanying libraries for use with OpenStreetMap data. It provides turn-by-turn routing, map matching (snapping noisy GPS traces to the road/path network), time+distance matrices, isochrones and elevation lookups over a self-built tile graph. Commonly run as a self-hosted routing backend so that location data never has to be sent to a third party.

Gotenberg is a developer-friendly API for converting numerous document formats (HTML, Markdown, URLs and LibreOffice-supported office documents such as DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and ODF) into PDF. It also merges, splits, flattens and manipulates PDFs using Chromium, LibreOffice, QPDF, pdfcpu, PDFtk and ExifTool. This script builds Gotenberg from source and runs it bare-metal instead of via Docker.

ZimaOS is the successor to CasaOS: a NAS operating system with an app store, ZFS-backed storage, RAID support and A/B system updates. It targets the Zima hardware line but runs on any x86-64 machine with UEFI.

OpenWrt is a Linux distribution for routers and embedded devices, with a full package manager and writable filesystem. Running it as a VM turns the host into a router.
